Another had seen that a supposedly clean slate had writing on it – though Slade, apparently realising he had been detected, had hurriedly cleaned it off. One member, peeking under the table, had seen that Slade’s foot had been removed from its slipper. Why, if the tricks they had seen were ‘almost puerile in their legerdemain’, had they allowed Slade to leave with the impression that he had convinced them, or at least made them take slate-writing seriously… The method they had adopted was to allow him full liberty to cheat, and to show no sign if they caught him. ![]() But when the Commission’s report came out, Slade discovered that his manifestations had been considered ‘fraudulent throughout’. 2 Slade had produced some spirit writing on a slate for members of the Commission, and he left his demonstration feeling that he had been treated courteously and fairly, and in fact that he had done rather well. The Seybert Commission report is itself suspicious, for reasons similar to those in the case of Eusapia Palldino’s American investigations-namely, intentionally loose controls supervised by inexperienced investigators determined to expose fraud. Afterwards, the slate was dragged from his hand and placed on his head, but the writing continued. Even so, Cox felt the pressure on the slate as the writing was produced, and he could hear the writing as well. The slate was placed on the table Cox placed one of his own hands on the slate Slade placed one hand on top of that and Cox held Slade’s other hand. For example, the veteran investigator (and occasional assistant of William Crookes), Serjeant EW Cox, reported some intriguing occurrences in a sunlit room. However, even some of the slate-writing seems difficult to dismiss. Besides, Slade produced much more impressive phenomena. This, admittedly, is easy to fake, though not clearly so under some of the conditions imposed on Slade. Slate-writing was a method sometimes adopted during séances at this time, in which a piece of previously blank slate would be found to contain messages from 'spirit communicators'. ![]() ![]() To some extent, no doubt, that reputation has been deserved, because there is ample evidence that Slade cheated on occasion, perhaps especially in his declining years. Because the skeptical portrayal of Slade is the dominant one, Slade is now remembered primarily for (1) a farcical trial, (2) an alleged exposure by the Seybert Commission, and (3) the phenomenon of slate-writing. However, he was controversial, and today he is primarily remembered as a trickster. When the Séance is over, everyone will vote for the most entertaining spiritual contact. The case of Henry Slade is one of the more intriguing cases of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century mediumship. Witnesses reported that Slade produced a variety of physical phenomena, some as good as any produced by DD Home. Outrageous humor will be encouraged during contact and channeled dialog / monologs with spirits. The other team members may sit at the table or sit anonymously on the couch and run the remote controls. At least one team member would be at the table. Each team will have a turn at the table to contact their spirit. Observers sitting in couches facing a round table. The experience: The room would be very dimly lit.All done with intentional humor, laughter and surprise.Since there will be multiple teams, one team's remotes shouldn't trigger another team's devices. The receiving device may or may not make use of cheap sound players or old cell phones / mp3 players. It would not have a visual interface since the activation is to be done discretely in the dark. The remote control(s) would fit in a pocket or hidden under clothes.Maximum distance between sending and receiving devices would be 100 feet. The receiving device would be placed in hidden locations in a room and would play the sound or trigger the mechanical action.make a lamp chain rattle or a birthday card fall or other like manifestations. The playing of a sound effect or voice recording not to exceed 10 seconds. They would use a concealed remote control to trigger: Each team will try to surprise and entertain other teams. I would have multiple teams of 2 or 3 people that would that would fake contact with a fake spirit. Here is the context, constraints and my desired outcomes: I’m very experienced with handling general electromechanical hardware. I’m an Arduino beginner, so this will help me focus my studies on fruitful time investments and not get lost on tangents. I’m looking to hold a Séance party and would appreciate suggestions that would help me to select simple hardware and code to assist in my desired illusions.
